![]() Unfortunately, that just doesn’t seem to be the case right now for the former NFL MVP. Can Newton take one in the gut and come to the conclusion that he’s no longer a starting quarterback in the NFL? As a backup, he still brings a lot to the table. But he simply has not been QB1 material since suffering through both a shoulder injury in 2018 and Lisfranc fracture in 2019.ĭespite all of this, Newton still believes that he should be one of the 32 starting quarterbacks in the NFL today. Sure Newton has scored 17 touchdowns on the ground during that span. He played in just two games with the Panthers in 2019 and has struggled big time over the past two seasons with the New England Patriots and during a second stint in Carolina. Let’s just hope the Panthers do all the necessary homework to make the best decision for them.An argument can be made that Newton has not been a starter-caliber quarterback since the 2018 season. However, if Richardson bombs, that’s bad news bears, especially if Young and Stroud shine. If Richardson flourishes elsewhere, then you will have to learn to live with that decision to pass on him. In short, no one is going to harpoon you if you play it safe with Stroud and he does not work out. Overall, you have to be firm in your decision if you’re Carolina. If Richardson hits his ceiling, then the Panthers will have their next Newton and times will be good. Then again, Newton was not super accurate coming out, and people had major reservations about Josh Allen coming out of Wyoming. His stellar showing at the NFL combine seemed to mask the fact he is not an accurate passer. Will that be good enough?įrom an upside standpoint, Richardson has everyone’s attention. My concern is I don’t know how close he is to hitting his ceiling. I don’t think being propped up in the Ohio State system is a huge deal. He is every bit the pocket-passing prototype you see coming out. While I do like all four quarterbacks slated to go in the top 10, Stroud is No. 9…Ĭlearly, the safer pick in this exercise is Stroud. For that reason, I tend to like the Panthers’ decision to move up, as opposed to the Bears moving down to No. The Panthers gave up a lot for this pick and as long as they nail it, nobody is going to care what it cost to do business in-conference with Chicago. ![]() Despite numerous injuries over the past few seasons, Newton maintains that he has plenty left to offer. It was a bold move for Panthers general manager Scott Fitterer to move up from No. Cam Newton finds himself in that situation, having suffered a spectacular fall following his Super Bowl appearance with the Carolina Panthers in 2015. The question is if the team trading up with Arizona will be cool with settling for the third choice of quarterback after what Carolina and Houston decide to do. The next most likely team to trade back has to be the Arizona Cardinals picking at No. I highly doubt anyone will want to trade up to No. I don’t know how much leverage the Panthers have in this situation. ![]() NFL rumors: Carolina Panthers torn on C.J. Stroud is the safer pick, but Richardson has the upside of noted Panthers legend Cam Newton. Debating whether they are willing to use the first pick of the draft on Richardson. After speaking with multiple sources this weekend including those close to the team, the Carolina Panthers are targeting two quarterbacks in the draft- CJ Stroud/Ohio St & Anthony Richardson/UF. ![]()
